No Limit Texas Holdem - The players
The kinds of players for this game can be summed up into 3 basic types:
-The gambler: aggressive and partial to no limit poker.
-New Kids on the Block: prone to making mistakes having learnt how to play by watching high stake tournaments on TV.
-The Veterans: experienced no limit players who gain at the expense of the above types.
Players in no limit games have to be skilful since mistakes cost dearly. However, it is a game that attracts maximum players, since winnings can come fast. The downside being, that the experienced players eliminate the weaker ones - especially in no limit and pot limit games - fairly easily, resulting in the money source into the game drying up.
No Limit Texas Holdem - How to play
Players are dealt two cards face down each and five cards - the "Community cards" or "The Flop" - are dealt face up on the table. Players have to determine which five cards of the seven, would best stand them a chance of winning the pot. Betting then commences:
-Minimum raise: The amount must be the same as the previous 'bet' or 'raise' in the second round.
-Maximum raise: When a player bets all his chips (also known a "all - in").
No Limit Texas Holdem - Betting rules
Two players to the left of the dealer place their wagers - the Small Blind and the Big Blind - and the cards are then dealt. Each player is dealt two cards and the player to the left of the Big Blind now has to make his move - folding, calling or raising - and so on clockwise. This is the first betting round. The second betting round begins with the dealer turning over three community cards. From now till the end of the game the player to the left of the dealer bets first. Players have the option of checking (not bet or fold) or betting if there are none in front of them. In the third and fourth rounds one community card is dealt per round. After the fourth round the player with the best hand wins the game.
No Limit Texas Holdem - some helpful tips
Table & Seat selection: Look for tables with newcomers. A fair knowledge of the no limit Texas Holdem game gives you an edge over them! An ideal seat is when you have an aggressive player to your right and a passive better to your left - this allows you to spot a raise early.
Hand Selection: Patience and smart thinking is the key! While high cards are desirable do not lose out by waiting for them too long - make the right judgment call.
Watch your opponents: Given the permutations and combinations possible, it is fairly difficult to gauge your opponents' hand. However, watching their moves could give you some idea of what they hold and you can adjust your play accordingly.
Body Language: Observe your opponents even when you're not in the game and note their playing styles. Mentally slot each player's characteristics. While most players give away a lot about their hands by gestures - some use it to deliberately misguide you. So be warned!
The Art of Bluffing: As you get the "feel" of poker, bluffing becomes an integral part of the game. Once you get the knack it makes you unpredictable. It keeps your opponents on its toes.
